Don’t get me wrong, the filmmaking of Adolescence was marvelous. The acting was impeccable, the camera work absolutely terrific and the music chilling. As a film lover this was first class. But as a feminist I was sad to only see the men’s POV.

    Spoilers ahead:

First episode you try to figure out what’s going on. You see a police man enter a childs room, arrest him while his father tries to make sense of it all. You’re at the police station where men take him in, men try to defend him. The only active people are the men. Yes, there’s the mother, there’s the sister, there’s the second police officer, but they’re all standing on the sidelines, letting the men take the lead. Sure, you can say, first episode we’re following the murderer and in his world the men take the lead but it was still something that I didn’t like.

Second episode, we’re in the school. You’re taken aback by the state of the school but then again, no one is really surprised. Most schools are neglected, not only in the UK and the romanticized version that we have because of movies and series is just not true. It’s a wake up call, not only for the officers (btw honest question: wasn’t that a conflict of interest when the officer had to enter his son’s classroom?) but for everyone watching. The series doesn’t give a solution but if it gets the right people talking (i.e. the British government in that case) then everything is on track. Again, the focus is on the male police officer while the female police officer hangs around and gives him advice.

I absolutely loved the third episode. I’m still analyzing parts of it in case I missed something (which I sure did). I think everyone that saw this series agrees that this episode was the pinnacle of filmmaking. The back and forth, the read-between the lines, the imagery, everything was so on point. And the scariest part for me is that Owen Coopers character after being asked three times if he understands what it means that Katie is dead, refused to answer and dialed back to „but she humiliated me…“. I’m not gonna get into this but I’m getting tired of people defending him because of that. I wish that the show runners would have been more clear that yes, there is a reason but that doesn’t justify it.

Anyways the fourth and last episode is where they lost me. It’s the father’s birthday and everything focuses around him. His van was sprayed (also help me out if I’m missing something cause English isn’t my first language, but nonse was translated as pedophile? Was there a reason other than to bully them?) so he gets (understandably) heated. Mom’s there to help calm him down. Daughter and mother seem to walk on eggshells around him but even with their heart-to-heart it feels like every person in this household is completely focused on the father. Maybe it is to explain, where the murderer has his violent tendencies from but wouldn’t it be better to explain this with the focus on what his actions do to the people around him. I do understand that this is reality in a lot of households, but you can also paint reality while also critiquing it. In the end the father sits in his son’s room and cries and it is a scene brilliantly acted by Stephen Graham. But I can’t feel sorry for him, because I’m constantly feeling sorry for his wife that puts everything on hold to cater to him and even more sorry for the daughter, Lisa, who mentions getting bullied in school and no one even hears it cause they’re all so focused on the father who does nothing but pity himself.

When it ended I was missing something and it’s the POV from the victim. Katie was a three dimensional human being that was murdered. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes but in my opinion there’s a huge difference between bullying and murder. It would have been nice to see a flashback of her life or what she left behind, her family after she was gone or maybe even her best friend. Two minutes of the best friend talking about her life isn’t cutting it when we humanize the murderer and villainize the victim. I can understand why so many people come to defend the murderer on social media because Katie isn’t shown as a person, but as a caricature. She is used to excuse his behavior while stripping her of any humanity. And in the end the severity of her life gone is minimized.

I think the intention of this series was good and it’s important to make these pieces in order to get society and politics talking about it. I would like to see an anti-series, where it focuses on Katie. I have a lot of ideas but this article will be too long if I actually get into it now. However I would love to know what your thoughts on this series are? Did you also like the acting or did you also miss something? Please let me know in the comments 🙂

    Black Comedy Crime

    2h3min

Not gonna lie, the only reason I started watching was a TikTok, where Emily Blunt screamed at Catherine O’Hara „No Mom, I survived you!“ and I thought it was a film about the emancipation of a woman in her 30s/40s.

It wasn’t. I then got really confused if I somehow started watching Hustlers (2019 with Jennifer Lopez) as the film starts in a strip club and Emily Blunt having to earn money. But we quickly meet Chis Evans‘ character, somehow not too different from the men that he generally plays, offering her a deal of a lifetime. Obviously lying because the company he is working for is about to be out of business. I’ll be honest, I love Chris Evans but this role annoyed the hell out of me.

Emily Blunt sweeps in, more luck than sense, making the first big deal and from then on it goes upwards, they all make more money than they could ever dream of. You find out the stuff they’re selling though isn’t as harmless as it seems and so the whole thing goes down and Emily Blunt is at the forefront exposing Chris Evans and Andy Garcia, her strange boss. Emily Blunt in my opinion is also the saving grace of this movie, I loved watching her giving the men what they deserved.

By the way, the scene that initially got me to start this movie was quite disappointing as it was inconsequential to the rest of the movie.

The whole movie was okay, there was nothing I would outright criticize, the performances were okay to good, the camera, light and music fit and overall the message of the corrupt health system in the USA was quite realistic. Maybe because of what is happening in/with the USA at the moment or the fact that someone like me has to live knowing that money-hungry people don’t even stop at people’s lives it left a bad aftertaste and I don’t think I would recommend it.

Have you seen this movie? What are your thoughts on it? And what movie should I watch next?

I’ve been MIA for such a long time that I was scared to even open this blog again. I wanted to share films that I’m passionate about and I’ve seen so many amazing pieces that I wanted to discuss but I’m working part-time in order to make money and the other time I’m trying to make life work as an actor and musician. I never really find the time to write the articles in the way that I want them to be and there’s a lot of research that goes into writing them. So I thought I need to change my approach to this. This was supposed to be a fun thing and I’m going to make this a fun thing.

I will focus on what is actually going on. So at the moment it’s time to contact all the Casting Directors. I have a new agency so I have something to tell them when I’m reaching out. If you’re an actor how do you reach out to Casting Directors? Do you do this via E-Mail or Instagram or something entirely different?

Also I’m doing an accent course for speaking English. I probably could use one in German as well, but I want my focus to be on the international market so I can’t do everything at once. I just had my first lesson and it was a lot of fun but also really exhausting.

Anyways, I’m not abandoning this blog, just changing my view of how things have to be. If you happen to come across this, please let me know what type of movies/series you watch and want to talk about? And if you want to know anything about the acting life, please let me know as well.

    Until then, bye-bye! 🙂

As an avid fan of french movies, there was no way I’d miss this one. A renowned orchestra conductor Thibaut(Benjamin Lavernhe) who is diagnosed with leukemia finds out he’s been adopted and has a brother (Jimmy – Pierre Lottin). He goes to meet him to ask him to be his bone marrow donor and the two get to know each other.

The brothers grew up very differently; Thibaut in the upper class, having all the opportunities needed to succeed as an orchestra conductor whereas Jimmy’s found family was struggling financially which led him to pursue music only as his hobby in a local marching band.

Having been unfamiliar with the actors prior to watching, I found their performances refreshing and authentic. The movie was very minimalistic and realistic, it didn’t need big moments to tell the gravity of words being spoken or the despair of the life you’ve been given that you can change nothing about.

Both main actors did a great job conveying their emotions and the inner turmoil and just the right amount for me to interpret in the silences. But the supporting actors should not be forgotten. My dad plays in a marching band as well and while watching we all had to laugh cause the characters were so similar to his band. The filmmakers truly captured the essence of everyday life while highlighting the uniqueness of each character.

I’m not a big fan of big moments so the ending left me a bit sad. I know that endings don’t necessarily have to be happy but I would have wished for them to tie things together at the concert at the factory instead of Thibauts concert, this way I was only left with hoping for Jimmys future.

Still, all in all I was happy to watch another french film as you can tell that everyone involved in this movie really loved the story, the art and the music. And to me, that is what good film making is about.
